Coal Industry: Advanced Dewatering Solutions
Maximize Coal Quality. Close the Water Loop.
Heavy-duty filtration systems engineered for Coal Preparation Plants (CHPP) and Washeries.
At Loway Equipment, we don’t just treat wastewater; we help you recover valuable product. We partner with coal operations globally to transform coal slurry into high-value clean coal cake, stackable tailings, and clear process water for recirculation.
In an industry driven by tonnage and calorific value, our focus is on High-Speed, Low-Moisture Separation.

The Core Challenge: Moisture & Abrasion
Coal washeries face a dual challenge: Economics and Environment.
- Product Value Loss: High moisture in Fine Coal (Clean Coal) directly reduces its Lower Heating Value (LHV) and sales price.
- Tailings Management: Wet tailings ponds are a liability. Modern mines require Dry Stacking.
- Extreme Abrasion: Coal slurry contains silica and pyrites that destroy standard equipment.
- Water Scarcity: Washing consumes massive volumes of water. High recovery rates are essential.
For coal applications, standard filtration is too slow and produces cake that is too wet. Loway deploys Fast-Opening Chamber & Membrane Filter Presses.
Why Our Presses Fit Coal Operations:
- Maximize Revenue (Clean Coal): By reducing Fine Coal moisture to 18-22%, we boost the calorific value significantly compared to belt presses or vacuum filters.
- Slash Cycle Time: Our "Fast-Opening" hydraulic system opens plates in batches (or all at once), reducing unloading time by 60% and increasing daily throughput.
- Dry Stacking (Tailings): We convert liquid refuse into a solid, drip-free cake suitable for safe backfilling or land reclamation.
Unbiased Technology Selection: What Works for Coal?
Best for Clean Coal & Tailings
Highest Profit. Produces the driest cake (lowest moisture), maximizing product value and enabling dry stacking. The static design handles abrasion well.
Acceptable for Coarse Tailings
Good throughput, wetter cake. Effective for large volumes of coarse refuse where moisture content is less critical. However, belt wear costs can be high due to abrasion.
NOT RECOMMENDED
High Wear Risk. The abrasive nature of coal and silica will rapidly destroy the screw shaft and rings. We advise against using Screw Presses for coal applications.
Key Applications in Coal Processing
Application | The Goal | The Loway Solution & Outcome |
Fine Clean Coal(Flotation Concentrate) | Increase Sales Value. Minimize moisture to boost heat value (kcal/kg) for blending. | High-Pressure Membrane Press. Squeezes coal fines to <20% moisture, creating a product ready for immediate sale without thermal drying. |
Coal Tailings (Refuse)(Thickener Underflow) | Eliminate Ponds. Convert slurry into stackable solids for safe disposal. | Fast-Opening Chamber Press. Large-format presses process massive volumes of tailings, recovering 95% of process water. |
Acid Mine Drainage (AMD)(Pit Water) | Compliance. Neutralize pH and remove heavy metals/solids. | Corrosion-Resistant Design. Specialized plates and pumps designed to handle low-pH mine water. |
FGD Wastewater(Power Plants) | ZLD Pretreatment. Remove solids before evaporation. | High-Solids Separation. Robust dewatering reduces the load on downstream Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems. |

The Manufacturer Advantage: Built for Tonnage
Coal plants don’t operate on a “lab scale.” You need industrial reliability.
- Large-Scale Capacity: We manufacture giant presses with filtration areas up to 1000m² to match CHPP throughputs.
- Coal-Specific Cloths: We use specialized monofilament/multifilament filter cloths that resist blinding from coal fines and withstand abrasion.
- Explosion-Proof Safety: Motors and control cabinets are rated for dust-hazard zones (Zone 21/22).
- Proven ROI: Clients typically achieve ROI within 12-18 months through water savings and increased coal sales value.
FAQ: Coal Washing Solutions
Have More Questions? Our technical team is ready to provide detailed, personalized guidance.
Q1: Your presses are "Fast Opening." How fast?
A standard press takes 20 mins to unload. Loway’s Fast-Opening system discharges a large press in 3-5 minutes, allowing for more cycles per shift.
Q2: What moisture content can we expect?
Typically, 18-22% for clean coal and 20-25% for tailings, depending on ash content and particle size. This is significantly drier than the 28%+ typical of belt presses.
Q3: Can you handle the abrasion?
Yes. We use abrasion-resistant inlet sleeves and heavy-duty cloths. Unlike Screw Presses that wear out internally, Filter Press wear is mostly limited to the replaceable cloth.
Q4: Can the filter press operate fully automatically in a 24/7 coal plant?
Yes. Our presses are designed for unmanned operation. The entire cycle—filling, filtering, squeezing, air blowing, and discharging—is controlled by the PLC. We also include Automatic Cloth Washing systems (high-pressure water bars) to prevent coal fines from blinding the cloth, ensuring consistent performance shift after shift without manual cleaning.
Q5: Do you provide the complete dewatering system, or just the press?
We provide the complete package. This includes the Filter Press, high-pressure Feed Pumps, Automatic Valves, PLC Control Cabinet, and even the structural steel platforms and walkways. We can deliver a turnkey solution that integrates seamlessly into your existing washery layout.
